Irena Hauck

We are excitedly awaiting to hear our upcoming guest speaker, Irena Hauck on Monday, May 31st.  She will be taking us through her presentation:  “Backward Glances” which is a 2 part series. 

• Part 1 - “Determination for Democracy” - depicting the Solidarity uprising in 1980-81.
• Part 2 - “Country living” - exploring rural life and culture in Poland in the 70's and changes over time.

Irena Hauck's passion for photography found its mark when she was invited to work with a team of journalists for student's national newspapers.  Her images highlight emotions and human content while documenting the daily life of ordinary people. These times were exciting and challenging as they also coincided with the start of "Solidarity" movement. Although not planning to leave Poland, she pursued a short term trip to Canada. Against all odds she was granted a passport, packed a single backpack and boarded an airplane to Toronto. In that backpack she brought to Canada freshly-printed photographs of the strikes and demonstrations. After a few months it became clear that a safe return to Poland was out of the question, as martial law was introduced leading to mass arrests of "Solidarity" activists and supporters. Overnight, civil rights were suppressed along with freedom of speech and press.

Irena made Canada her new home while continuing to freelance for numerous Canadian based Polish newspapers. On return trips to Poland, Irena continues to document the massive changes that have occurred over the decades and closer to her Stratford home will be seen chasing storms as opportunity arises.
